My how we've grown!

>> 9.08.2010

I'll start off with another comparison of just how much the boys have grown since we first got them. The photo on the left was taken at the very end of February, and the one on the right was taken over the weekend. They look like real "dogs" now- not puppies anymore!

Other than not really "looking" like puppies anymore, they are still 100% puppy in action. I hear that the puppy phase lasts until at least age two, so we've got a long way to go until the really start to "act like adults." With these guys though, I really can't see them ever slowing down. And I guess when you have parents that are so active themselves, that's to be expected!

So, the summer was great, but I'm happy to embrace the fall. I really love the months of September and October. I like to see the leaves change and take part in all of the fun activities that the fall months present. Plus, the weather is just perfect for doing all of the things that Greg and I love to do outside! I have a feeling that there will be a lot of hiking at Gambrill (and other places too!) going on over the next few months.

The boys keep growing (I guess that's what puppies do) and getting bigger each day. I took Lance by the vet about a week ago, and he was almost 62 lbs. Greg and I had guessed around 60, so we were dead on. I'm not sure how much Jackson weighs, but I'd imagine it's about the same (although he is a big shorter than Lance). They look completely different from each other. Lance is huge and has crazy, wild fluffy hair. Jackson is smaller and has very fine reddish hair and doesn't seem to shed nearly as much as Lance.
Both are good and obedient some of the time, but still get distracted by things and don't always listen. Greg and I walk them every day, usually a few times, and often those walks are an hour long. We go all over the neighborhood, and have recently incorporated an after-dinner (after we eat dinner) walk each night around 7:00 or so. It's nice when the sun is going down and everyone seems to be out with their dogs. Our hope is that this will tire the boys out a bit so that we can sit on the couch for a bit afterwards and relax in front of the television. It doesn't usually tire them out for long, though.

Though the boys are usually good on the leash, there are a few things that drive Greg and I crazy. The first is what I call "dive-bombing." It started with Jackson, and just like he typically does, Lance was soon to copy Jackson's behavior. We'll be walking along and the boys will just dart down at something on the sidewalk or street to pick it up suddenly. Ususally it's an acorn or a leaf, but sometimes it's a clump of mowed grass, which is really annoying. We're trying desparately to curb this behavior, but it's really hard. We keep them on a short leash and make them walk right at our sides, which helps a little, but doesn't really eliminate the problem. We, of course, say a firm "NO!" when they dive-bomb, and reward them with treats when they are walking like they should. My friend Justin uses a collar that applies pressure when you pull up on it, and says that can help. I'm just SO leery of anything that I think would cause harm or hurt them, although he assures me that this won't hurt. He even put the collar around his own leg to see how it felt. So, that's a possibility.

Our other biggest issue with the pups is how much they have destroyed the house. The kitchen is completely wrecked. They have chewed up the base molding and windowsills, and more recently, started chewing a big hole in one of the walls. I really thought they were over this phase, but Jackson proved otherwise the other day. We have been leaving them in the kitchen (as opposed to in the crates) when we leave for any amount of time under about 4 or 5 hours with no problems. But, when we did this last Sunday for only an hour at most, Jackson mananged to chew a huge hole through a wall. How he did this, I have no idea.
They've also wrecked the carpet in the living room and pretty much destroyed the couch. We let them get on the couch, so we had this coming. When we have new furtniture though, this WILL NOT HAPPEN.
Greg and I are in the process of trying to move, so we know we'll have to have a lot of work done before we can sell (or rent) the house. So, right now, as much as it makes me cringe, we just live in the destruction. I am a super clean-freak, and try to keep everything as tidy as possible, so this is just really making me nuts. Greg and I dream of the day where we are in our new, clean home with dogs that won't tear everything up. That will be so nice....

Even though they drive me crazy sometimes, I still am so in love with Lance and Jackson and happy they are in our lives. It's unexplainable to have something (or two somethings!) that just love you unconditionally and want to please you. And it's great having two little shadows that are so interested in me that they want to follow me wherever I go!

Photos from September 2nd

I took these photos of the boys with my new Nikon D90 camera over the weekend. They're nothing too special- just the boys hanging out in the living room and kitchen, showing a bit of what they have destroyed in our house (more so in the kitchen).

Lance really loves to look out the window!

I'm not causing any trouble, Mom!

The boys looking sweet...

We LOVE to wrestle! Bodyslam!!

Can you see any spots of where my brother and I have destroyed the kitchen?

Last summer post :(

>> 8.16.2010

Tomorrow is my first day back to work to start another new school year. I always have mixed feelings about that. I really love the summer- I love the freedom of really having nothing to do and being able to be completely flexible with my plans. But, in another way, it is really nice to have a routine and it's even nicer to have a steady paycheck.
I will also be posting a lot more when school starts back up- I haven't spent much time behind a computer over the summer. That will be changing really soon!
It's been such a wonderful summer with the pups- I can't imagine life without them now! I started pretty much every day this summer with an hour-plus long walk around the neighborhood with the boys. We generally had to get out of the house pretty early (before 7 am) because the heat this summer was just brutal. Even at 8 am, I would often come back covered in sweat. I also have loved the luxury to take them for a hike in the middle of the day and to meet my friend John up at Sugarloaf to hike on Friday mornings after I taught spin class.
Luckily fall is around the corner. I love the fall- I love everything about it- and the weather is perfect for all of those outdoor activities that Greg and I love so much.
I never posted photos from one of my favorite "doggie events" this summer that happened the first weekend in August. The monthly "first Saturday" event in August is always "Dog Days of Summer." Greg and I have been envious of all of the people walking around with dogs each summer and swore that we would have one of our own to participate the next year. So, this year we finally did! People go all out for this event; dressing their dogs up in all kinds of costumes or just simply taking them out for a night on the town. We headed out right at the beginning of the evening with the boys and started walking around Market Street. We didn't really "dress the boys up," just put their cute little Red Sox scarves around their necks. Of course, they got a lot of attention. They pretty much draw a crowd wherever we go because they are just so darn cute and friendly, but also because there are two of them. Flying Dog brewery had a little beer garden on Carroll Creek that was dog-friendly and an 80s cover band played. We had a great time there talking with other dog people. It's great talking to other dog people- it's just this interesting sub-culture of people that have this love for dogs that non-dog-people probably think is nuts. But, I get it. :)
We left the beer garden to go get dinner at Brewer's Alley- they had a big area roped off outside for regular table service where people could sit with their dogs. There was a pretty long wait, but we hung out with my mom, Joe and Brady, so it was just fine. When we eventually got our table, the boys laid right down and relaxed while we ate.
We headed back over to the Creek to grab one more beer from Flying Dog (although they had run out) and listen to the band some more. It was SUCH a great night. I wish they did this event more than once a year!
Greg had a big mountain bike race the next day at Schaffer Farm in Germantown. I went along to support him and brought the boys to keep me company. They were pretty good, but got a little bored being attached to a leash and not having a lot of room to play around. Our friend Brie tried to snap a family portrait, but as always, it's hard to get both of the boys to cooperate. We had a good time- and Greg was awesome, placing in the top 10 finishers in his class.

So it's back to reality tomorrow. I'm trying to have a positive attitude about it. I will definitely be missing my boys while I'm at work all day.

Pups in the pool!

>> 7.31.2010

Our friends Wayne and Kathryn invited us over last night for a doggie play date and dinner. They have two labs who swim in their pool, so we wanted to see if the pups would join in on the fun. They were a little shy at first and didn't really know what to make of it. After Lance accidentally fell into the pool and was able to swim to safety, Jackson was soon to follow. They eventually built their confidence up and kept jumping back in for me! They even played a little fetch, going after balls and toys that were thrown into the pool.
L&J had a great time playing with Moose and Butters and spent the rest of the night happily chewing on bones from Hedgeapple Farm that Wayne and Kathryn were kind enough to get. What a great night- I don't think we stopped laughing at them for a moment!

Finally- a summer update!

>> 7.23.2010

Yeah.. it's been way too long since I've updated this blog! I'm not going to pretend that I will be good about maintaining it for the rest of the summer, but I'm sure that once school starts back up I will get back into the swing of things. My brain seems to take a rest during the summer months, and that includes putting any kind of thought into blog posts.

So, to recap what's gone on in the Beach/Martin household since the beginning of June:
The school year wrapped up in the middle of June, which meant that I once again packed up everything in my classroom and department to move to another new school. The "new Linganore" is just about complete and we will be moving in for the start of the 2010/2011 school year. Shortly after the last day of school, Greg and I took a week long trip to Colorado. We found a kennel that we really liked (Mariah Belle Manor in Mt. Airy) and left the boys there while we were gone. It was really hard to part with them, but being in Colorado was really great. I called the kennel after the first day to check on the boys and they were doing great! They got lots of play time and individual attention.
Our trip wrapped up with a big surprise- we got engaged! After three great years together, it was time! And the proposal itself couldn't have been more perfect- on a little island in Lake Dillon that we kayaked to- Greg really did a great job! So, we're planning for a July 2011 wedding.
Anyway, when we finally went to pick the pups up at the kennel, we couldn't have been more excited to see them! They seemed to have done great and were exhausted for the next 24 hours (lots of playtime and noise I suppose!)
The rest of the summer has been great. I've been able to start each day with an early morning hour-long walk with the boys. The "puppy alarm" goes off around 6:00 each morning, so as soon as they wake me up, we're out the door. This is good too, because if we went out any later, it would be way too hot!
Jackson and Lance continue to grow like weeds and are loving the newly found freedom we have given them of having the run of the main level of the house. They've done pretty well, but still require quite a bit of supervision.
We boarded the boys at Mariah Belle for a second time when we went to the beach this past weekend, and they did really well again. It's definitely nice to have a place that we can trust to take them! We have one more trip coming up this summer- 4 days in Boston, but luckily my parents will be able to help out with that.
I'll be sure to post more photos as they come along and try to update more often. Not making any promises, but I will get back in the habit of posting at least once a week when school starts again. Until then, happy summer everyone!

Memorial Day weekend

I'm going to keep this brief, but feel that it needs to be mentioned! Greg and I flew up to Boston for 2 days over Memorial Day weekend, and obviously the boys did not go with us. As mentioned in a previous post, they were split up while we were gone. My dad and Sherry got Jackson, and Mom and Joe got Lance. We dropped Jackson off first on Saturday morning, then quickly went over to mom's to drop off Lance, and we were on our way. Preparing to go out of town definitely has become a lot higher maintainence and time consuming than life pre-puppies! I was able to breathe a big sigh of relief when we were comfortably sitting on the plane.
I was good and held off checking on in the boys until Sunday (though Greg and I must have talked about them a good 200 times on Saturday). Sherry sent me a text about how Jackson was doing Sunday morning, so I called her back to get the report on his first night with them. They LOOOOOVED him. He even slept on the couch with my little sister, Keating! He was calm and very well-behaved and "co-existed" with the other dogs. I called to get the report on Lance after talking to Sherry. He was good too- and getting along with Uncle Brady just fine. I'm sure that both boys were getting lots of attention and being happily spoiled by their grandparents, and that made me feel good!
We flew back in on Sunday morning and met my dad in New Market to get Jackson. I was so happy to see him- and I swear he looked bigger than when we left! We headed over to my moms to get Lance and reunite the boys. The reunion was great- they ran to each other and wrestled until they wore each other out! Mom and Joe were nice enough to make lunch for all of us (including a cherry pie with cherries picked from the tree in the backyard!) and let us relax for a bit.
What a wonderful, amazing weekend in Boston - although it was just a bit too short! We had a great time visiting with Greg's dad and Sheila, going to the game on Sunday (and the Red Sox won 8-1!!) and walking around the city. The weather could not have been more perfect, either!
I don't have any photos of the boys from the weekend, so I'll just include one from Sunday after the game :)

Here are two happy parents!

Things to make me smile while I'm at work

>> 5.26.2010

I love when Greg emails me photos that he takes of the boys with his Blackberry during the day. He took them on a walk this afternoon and sent me this photo:

Seeing this makes me very excited for when I get home and get to take the boys on their post-dinner walk.

In other news, I saw Jackson lift his leg to pee for the very first time today. I was letting the boys out in the morning before I left for work, and there he went! It might not sound exciting, but I sure thought it was! Greg said that he's seen Lance do it twice, but I haven't seen that happen yet. Just another sign of our little boys growing up before our eyes!!

Lazy, rainy Sunday

>> 5.24.2010

Since the weekend was so rainy (Sunday in particular), we didn't get to take the boys out nearly as much as we would have liked. However, Greg and I were extremely productive around the house! The pups were super mellow all morning on Sunday and well into the afternoon. I made the trek down to Trader Joes after I taught my spin class and Greg worked around the house until there was a break in the weather. I snapped a few photos of the boys after their early afternoon walk with Greg:

Typical Jackson....
Lance loves to lay like this... just letting it all hang out!!

Jackson takes a field trip

>> 5.22.2010

Since Greg and I are going to Boston next weekend, we are leaving the boys with my parents. Specifically we're leaving Jackson with my dad and stepmom (Sherry) and Lance with my mom and Joe. Jackson had never been to my dad's before, so I wanted to take him over to meet their animals and smell his way around the house.
Since my dad and Sherry live so close to my work, it didn't make a lot of sense for me to go all the way back home to get Jackson only to turn around again. Greg was nice enough to come bring Jackson to meet me at work so I could just leave from there. He brought Lance along for the ride too, and they drew quite a crowd! After Greg and Lance left, I brought Jackson up to run around in my classroom. I tried to get a photo of him sitting on a chair, which wasn't so easy. :)

Jackson was great though, and everyone commented on how cute and sweet he is (and how big he has gotten!) Since Jackson and Lance came from one of our custodian's dogs, he has close ties to Linganore, and everyone at work has seen photos that I have emailed around.

After we left school, I headed over to my dad and Sherry's house. Sherry was the only one home at the time, so we played with Jackson in the backyard for a bit. And then she brought Toby out- who is a feisty little Pomeranian. Toby is cute, full of energy, and a nice little dog. I was sure that him and Jackson would get along just fine. But, boy was Jackson scared of him! Toby made it very clear right away that Jackson was on his turf, and Jackson didn't try to argue! Instead, he hid between Sherry's legs! Toby definitely barked at Jackson for a while and Jackson didn't try to push it. After a while, he tried to "make friends" with Toby by giving him a little kiss, but Toby wasn't having it. I think Toby got tired after a while and just gave up, but the two never really played together.
I'm pretty sure that they'll get along just fine after Jackson is there for a little while longer next weekend. Keating and Noah came home from school soon after that and Keating cam outside to play with the dogs. Jackson saw this as another opportunity for someone to cuddle up to and "hide under." We just had to laugh at him. It's funny to see Jackson dominated by another dog (and such a little one at that) because he's such an alpha at home. Sometimes it's nice to see another dog boss him around, because he bosses poor Lance around all the time. (We know it's all in good fun though.)
We took the dogs inside the house and Sherry played with Jackson for a bit while Keating played some beautiful piano music for me (she is so talented!!) While I was listening to her play, my dad came home and they introduced Jackson to Chopper, the cat and the other dog, Maizie (who is a long-hard chihuahua. Let's just say that neither of them are going to be Jackson's new best friend. We took them back outside and played fetch for a while. Toby made it very clear again that it was his ball that was being thrown, and again, Jackson respected that. And it made me very proud that Jackson didn't try to fight! He's such a sweet dog, and behaved so well. I would feel horrible leaving a crazy, out-of-control dog with my dad and Sherry to watch while we're gone!

After we left, Jackson slept the whole way home...
